“Oscar for Museums”, Grist 50 and Creative Capital

The Natural History Museum was a finalist for an international “Oscar for Museums”, NHM’s Narrative Change Director Julian Brave Noisecat and Executive Director Beka Economopoulos were both named in this year’s Grist 50 round-up of top fifty environmental leaders, and we’re honored to have been selected for the 2020 Creative Capital Award to develop a People’s Tribunal on natural history and its colonial legacy.

The Natural History Museum is pleased to take part in this group exhibition Like the Waters, We Rise, featuring a selection of print-based work that documents the contemporary Climate Justice Movement (2005-present), which is in truth a movement made up of movements, illuminating the many struggles, flashpoints, and victories by which communities have taken collective action.

Fake News, Flat Planets and Hot Winters: Museums, Climate Change and Public Discourse

Embedded in a political landscape that is increasingly fueled by “fake news” and distorted facts, museums are being challenged to ditch “neutral” positions on polarizing topics and embrace advocacy positions. This panel at the 2019 American Alliance of Museums convention explores the emerging interface between public discourse and the changing roles of museums through the topic of climate change.
