Power Beyond Extraction

On the week of October 22nd, Pittsburgh museums and cultural institutions will host Power Beyond Extraction, an event series curated by The Natural History Museum that looks at power in terms of both energy and the people power needed to bring about the just transition to a clean energy economy. Timed to coincide with the Shale Insight Conference, an annual convening and conversation about the future of energy hosted by industry, Power Beyond Extraction invites community leaders, activists, artists, and scholars to contribute to this city-wide conversation of regional, international, and inter-generational importance.

Whale People: Protectors of the Sea

This exhibition and short film, debuting at the Florida Museum of Natural History, tells the story of today’s environmental emergency through the figure of the orca. Native communities coast to coast enjoin us all to protect, restore, and pass on to future generations a respect for each other, the sacred waters, and all our relations.

Kwel Hoy: Many Struggles, One Front

This exhibition–the latest stop on the Lummi Nation’s Totem Pole Journey–connects the New Jersey science community’s efforts to protect the local watershed from the proposed PennEast Pipeline to the nearby Ramapough Lenape Nation’s struggle to stop the Pilgrim Pipeline, and the Lummi’s struggles to protect the waters of the Pacific Northwest from oil tankers and pipelines.

Kwel’ Hoy: We Draw the Line!

As we face the disruptive effects of anthropogenic climate change, Indigenous communities have taken a leading role in the grassroots movement to protect the environment for future generations. Kwel Hoy’: We Draw the Line introduces visitors to the values and concerns guiding Indigenous environmentalism, testifying to the resilience and courage of Native communities today.

Mining the HMNS

Is the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences a museum, or a PR front for the fossil fuel industry? This is the central question of “Mining the HMNS”, an exhibition by The Natural History Museum that interrogates the symbiotic relationship between the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and its corporate sponsors.
